Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC)

Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), narrowly escaped death when the helicopter he was initially scheduled to board crashed in the Ashanti Region, killing eight people, including two cabinet ministers.

In a last-minute change of plans, Nketiah directed his Vice Chairman, Dr. Samuel Sarpong, to attend the launch of the Responsible Co-operative Mining and Skills Development Programme in Obuasi on his behalf.

Tragically, Dr. Sarpong was among those who lost their lives in the crash.

Nketiah reflected on the unpredictability of life, stating, “Allah does what he wants. I was supposed to be on the flight, and last minute, I directed my vice chairman, Dr. Sarpong, to go and stand in for the party, and he accepted it.”

He urged bereaved families to find solace in their faith, describing the tragedy as a reminder of life’s unpredictability .

The helicopter crash occurred on August 6, 2025, in the Adansi area of the Ashanti Region, claiming the lives of prominent individuals, including:

  • Defence Minister: Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah
  • Environment Minister: Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed
  • NDC Vice Chairman: Dr. Samuel Sarpong
  • Other victims:
    • Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator
    • Samuel Aboagye, former parliamentary candidate
    • Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala
    • Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu
    • Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah

A state funeral is scheduled for August 15, 2025, and a flower-laying ceremony was held on August 7 and continues on August 9.
