Ken Ashigbey, CEO of the Ghana Chamber of Mines and Convener of the Media Coalition Against Galamsey, has strongly condemned politically exposed individuals involved in illegal mining, holding them morally responsible for the deaths of eight Ghanaians in a recent military helicopter crash.

On Citi Eyewitness News, Ashigbey urged Ghanaians to channel their grief into action, demanding accountability in the fight against galamsey.

He emphasized that merely shedding tears wouldn’t honor the lives lost and called for genuine action.

Ashigbey demanded that the government not only deport illegal miners, particularly foreign nationals, but also ensure they face full prosecution under Ghanaian law, paying stipulated fines and serving sentences.

He warned politically exposed individuals involved in galamsey that “the blood of these eight is on your head,” urging them to repent and step out of the illegal activity.

The helicopter crash, which occurred on August 6 in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region, claimed the lives of prominent figures, including Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, both known for their stance against illegal mining.

A state funeral is scheduled for August 15, and samples of the remains have been sent to South Africa for DNA testing to aid in identification.
