Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister of State in Charge of Government Communications

The Minister of State in Charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has addressed the assertions made by Old Tafo Member of Parliament (MP) Vincent Ekow Assafuah regarding President John Dramani Mahama’s recent travel arrangements.

Assafuah claimed that the president traveled abroad on an expensive private jet. President Mahama departed for an official two-nation visit to Japan and Singapore on Sunday, August 17, with the aim of enhancing bilateral relations and attracting investments to Ghana.

In his Facebook post, Assafuah speculated that the private jet, which allegedly left Accra around 7 a.m. on August 17, could incur rental costs of approximately $15,000 per hour, potentially totaling around $690,000 for the entire journey, which he suggested included stops in Japan, Singapore, Germany, and returning to Accra.

His post concluded with an emphatic expression, which quickly gained traction on social media and sparked further discussion. Minister Kwakye Ofosu responded to these claims in an interview on Citi Eyewitness News on Monday, August 18.

He characterized them as unfounded and described the effort as “a mediocre attempt at propaganda.” He clarified that President Mahama traveled on a commercial Emirates flight during this trip. “It appears that the MP’s comments may not be grounded in fact,” the minister remarked.

“President Mahama has not traveled by private jet; rather, he flew to Japan via Emirates, which is easily verifiable.” Minister Ofosu referred to the allegations as a misguided attempt at political discourse and encouraged the public to consider the factual nature of the president’s travel arrangements, which he assured are both transparent and verifiable.

He underscored the importance of basing statements on accurate information to facilitate constructive political dialogue.
